Canada goose family (Branta canadensis). This goose originally inhabited wetlands in North America, but it has been introduced into north- western Europe as well. It has adapted well to life in urban areas, and is familiar even in large cities. It lays between four and eight eggs, which it incubates for around a month. The young take two months or more to fledge, during which time they follow their parents around. The Canada goose feeds almost exclusively on vegetation, mainly grasses and other low plants. It may reach a length of over a metre when fully grown. Photographed in the north-western USA in June | |
