Ducklings with their mother. The mother is calling to her young to ensure that they stay near her. These are mallard ducks (Anas platyrhynchos). The mallard is a common duck that inhabits inland waters throughout Europe and North America. The female can lay between six and fifteen eggs, which she incubates for around a month. The young take up to two months to fledge. Breeding occurs in the northernmost parts of the range, and the mallard may migrate south for the winter. It feeds mainly on aquatic plants, although insects and other small animals are also taken occasionally. An adult may reach over 50 centimetres in length | |
