Juvenile American alligators (Alligator mississippiensis). These large reptiles inhabit freshwater swamps,lakes and bays in the south- eastern USA and surrounding islands. The American alligator spends much of the day basking by the banks of rivers and lakes. It hunts by day and night,taking turtles,snakes,fish and mammals. It averages around three metres in length.
