American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis). This white alligator has no pigments in its skin, and is referred to as leucistic. This condition is not quite albinism because the alligator still has pigments in its eyes. It is caused by a gene mutation. The American alligator inhabits freshwater swamps, lakes and bays in the south- eastern USA and the surrounding islands. It spends much of the day basking on the banks of rivers and lakes. It is a carnivore, hunting for turtles, snakes, fish and mammals. Male alligators can grow to 3.5 metres in length and weigh up to 450 kilograms. Photographed in the Louisiana swamp,USA | |
