American alligator. View of the head of an American alligator (Alligator mississipiensis). American alligators live in freshwater swamps, lakes and bays in the south-eastern USA and surrounding islands. They spend much of the day basking by the banks of rivers and lakes. They hold their mouths open to allow evaporation, which cools them down. They hunt by day or night, attacking turtles, fish, snakes and mammals. There are several reports of attacks on humans. They average about three metres in length, although giants reaching six metres have been seen occasionally. Photographed in the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge,Georgia,USA | |
