Leaf toad (Bufo typhonius) among dead leaves on a rainforest floor. Its light and dark brown markings camouflage against the leaf litter. The camouflage pattern breaks the body contours,so that the typical shape of a toad is no longer distinguishable. The light-rimmed black spots resemble holes in dead leaves with withering edges. This carnivorous toad feeds primarily on ants. At night,it may climb onto low leaves to sleep. The leaf toad is widespread throughout the Amazon Basin. Photographed in Peru | |
