Green poison arrow frog. Green,or golden, poison arrow frog (Dendrobates auratus) peering through a hole in a leaf. Its vivid coloration indicates the toxicity of its skin, deterring predators. Various native South American peoples use the cutaneous poison of dendrobatid frogs for the tips of their arrows. The poison contains a neurotoxin which can paralyse a bird or a small mammal almost immediately. These frogs live on the ground near water in Central and South American rainforests. They feed on spiders and insects. Photographed in Bocas del Toro,Panama | |
