Two-stick stingfish (Inimicus filamentosus) on the seabed. This fish, also known as the filament devilfish, inhabits the tropical waters of the Indian Ocean. It lies motionless on the seabed or a reef, and uses its cryptic colouration to avoid detection. When prey,a small fish or shrimp, nears its mouth,it engulfs it with a sudden gulp. It has a row of poisonous spines along its back to deter predators. These can deliver a very painful sting, but this is not fatal to humans. Photographed off Sulawesi,Indonesia | |
