Warty frogfish (Antennarius maculatus) on the seabed. This fish inhabits coral reefs in the tropical Indo-Pacific region. It is a lie-in-wait predator that attracts its prey using a lure. The lure (not seen) is a highly-modified fin that resembles a small fish. The frogfish attracts fish and crustaceans by jerking the lure back and forth. When prey approaches,it gulps it in by increasing the volume of its mouth by up to 12 times, which creates a powerful suction. The frogfish rarely swims, preferring to walk around on modified fins that act as legs (one seen at lower left). Photographed in the Lembeh Strait,Sulawesi,Indonesia | |
