Sargassum fish. Sargassum fish (Histrio histrio) camouflaged amongst fronds of sargassum seaweed (Sargassum sp.). This fish is covered in fleshy appendages which resemble the seaweed in which it lives. The imitation of plants by animals is known as phytomimesis. This camouflage allows it to lie in wait for other fish, its main prey, which it engulfs by rapidly opening its mouth wide, sucking the prey in. The camouflage also hides it from its own predators. When threatened, this fish has been known to inflate itself by gulping water. Photographed off Hawaii,USA | |
