Caribbean reef shark. View of a Caribbean reef shark (Carcharhinus springeri). Due to their versatility and keen senses sharks have a long evolutionary history. Sharks' skeletons are made from cartilage rather than bone. They can detect trace amounts of substances such as blood and trace them to their source. Sharks are essentially scavengers, they feed on injured fish, dead & rotting flesh and garbage from ships. They will however also prey on nearly all the larger marine animals. By preying on weak or maimed animals sharks help other species to maintain their genetic strength. Photographed in the Bahamas | |
