Lyme disease tick. Light micrograph of a nymph of the Deer Tick Ixodes scapularis (previously named Ixodes dammini). A nymph is an immature adult. The adult tick can transmit Lyme disease to humans. At right is the head with barbed,skin-piercing,blood-sucking mouthparts; the body and four pairs of legs are seen. This tick feeds on human blood, and in the process may transmit the bacterium Borrelia burgdorfi, cause of Lyme disease. Symptoms of this disease include skin lesions, cardiac and neurological abnormalities, and arthritis. Lyme disease is carried by I.scapularis in north and mid-west USA; and in Europe by the tick I.ricinus. Magnification: x14 at 35mm size | |
