Bark scorpion. Bark scorpion (Hadrurus hirsutus) on a rock. This large scorpion has a poisonous sting at the end of its tail. Its venom may be dangerous to humans, especially children. It inhabits the deserts of south-western North America. It is nocturnal and mainly hunts small invertebrates. It uses its venom for defence and attack, although only large or struggling prey animals are stung. Most victims are eaten as they are held in its large claws.
