Rice paper butterfly (Idea leuconoe) specimen. This large butterfly has a wingspan approximately 10 centimetres across. The conspicuous colouring indicates to predators that the rice paper butterfly is poisonous. It is therefore mimicked by harmless butterflies. The rice paper butterfly is part of the Nymphalidae family and has an under- developed pair of front legs (not shown). It inhabits the upper canopys of the primary forests and rarely comes to the ground. The rice paper butterfly is found only in Southeast Asia | |
