Butterfly chrysalis. Silver-coloured chrysalis (pupal case) of an Ithomid clearwing butterfly (Family Ithomiinae). A chrysalis is made by a caterpillar to protect it during its metamorphosis to a butterfly. The butterfly that emerges lacks the usual dense covering of scales that give other butterflies their distinct colouration. This transparency provides the clearwing butterfly with camouflage in the rainforests it inhabits. Photographed in the Peruvian rainforest | |
