Female spicebush silkmoth (Callosamia promethea) emerging from its cocoon. The female and male spicebush silkmoths are sexually dimorphic (they have different appearances). The female's wings are more patterned and more red-brown than the male's. When a moth emerges from its cocoon,it hangs from the cocoon to let its wings dry. The cocoon is spun inside a curled leaf and hangs from the host plant, such as spicebush or lilac, throughout the winter. The spicebush silkmoth is found from southern Canada to Florida,USA | |
