Luna moth. Luna moth (Actias luna) showing its antennae. The antennae are larger in the male, and are used to follow the pheromones (sexual scents) emitted by females. This moth does not feed in this adult stage, instead relying on fat reserves built up while it was a caterpillar. The reserves last around a week, and the moth dies at the end of this time. It inhabits eastern North America. Photographed in Kingston,Ontario,Canada | |
