Jewel scarab beetle (Chrysina strasseni) specimen. The scarab beetle family is one of the largest families of insects, with over 35,000 species worldwide. The scarab beetle is identified by the presence of a club at the end of its short and elbowed antennae (top centre). This beetle is adapted for burrowing and has well devloped tibiae on its forelegs (either side of head) for digging. The scarab beetle family contains two groups; the dung beetles, which bury their eggs in large balls of dung, and the chafers (shown here),which feed on plants. This specimen is from Honduras | |
