Fiery searcher beetle (Calosoma scrutator) specimen. This is one of the largest ground beetles, growing to almost four centimetres long. The head and thorax (top two body sections) are blueish, while the abdomen (largest body section) is is covered by large, metallic wing cases, called elytra. The beetle rarely uses its wings, prefering to crawl or climb. The beetle has curved jaws, used to capture prey. Both the larvae and adults eat caterpillars, giving it the alternative name of caterpillar hunter beetle. If attacked by a predator, this beetle will let out a bad odour in defence. The beetle is found in south Canada and the USA | |
