Prickly stick insect (Extatosoma tiaratum) walking across dried leaves. The prickly stick insect,or Macleay's spectre stick, has tiny spines on its head, body and legs, and leaf-like appendages extending from the legs and body. The overall effect is a resemblance to dead leaves, which camouflages the stick insect from predators. Mimicry of plants is called phytomimesis. The male (shown here) is smaller and more slender than the female. The male also has fewer abdominal spines and possesses long wings, which are capable of downward flight | |
