Peppermint stick insect (Megacrania batesii) with blue pigments on a Pandanus palm. This insect feeds on only a few species of Pandanus, which also provides it with shelter from predators. It gets its name from its defense mechanism. When threatened, the stick insect will spray an irritating peppermint- smelling fluid. The peppermint stick insect is only found in the wet tropics in Australia. Photographed in Cape Tribulation, northern Queensland,Australia | |
