Giant leaf insect (Phyllium giganteum) camouflaged against living leaves. A leaf insect imitates local foliage, with leaf-like veining on its legs and sometimes tattered brown edges. It feeds on plant material, and is native to the tropics. It is the largest species of the genus Phyllium, reaching up to 13 centimetres in length. Female leaf insects can reproduce sexually or asexually,by pathenogenesis. This mode of reproduction does not require fertilisation of the female's eggs. Consequently male leaf insects are rare in nature | |
