Lion's mane jellyfish (Cyanea capillata). This large jellyfish can have a bell up to two metres wide, with tentacles that can reach 30 metres in length. The tentacles are equipped with thousands of stinging cells (nematocysts),which inject a toxin into anything that touches them. The main diet of this jellyfish is fish, although it will eat practically anything that gets caught in its tentacles. Several humans have died after being stung. The lion's mane inhabits temperate and cool waters in the northern Atlantic Ocean. Specimens from Arctic waters are the largest, with a tentacle span longer than a blue whale | |
