Fossilised plankton. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the fossilised shell of Globolotalia menardii,a unicellular marine planktonic organism. The shell contains a pore (centre) through which the animal can extend branching pseudopodium in order to catch particles of food. Foraminiferan (single-celled micro- organism) deposits are the main constituent of chalk (limestone). They are important zonal fossils, being used to define the units of rock in which they are preserved. Magnification: x154 at 6x9cm size | |
