Trichonympha campanula. Light micrograph of many one-celled protozoan organisms,Trichonympha camp- anula. They are flagellates (hypermastigote) that live in the gut of termites. Their flagellae used in movement are seen as hair-like structures on the surface of each cell. These animals are pear- shaped, with the cell contents appearing granular. Many termites and wood-eating cockroaches rely on such flagellate organisms in order to digest wood. These organisms are particularly efficient at digesting the fibrous cellulose found in wood.
