Aerospace materials: a sample of a wing leading edge section made form a carbon-carbon ceramic material. This technology has been developed for the X-30 National Aero-Space Plane project. This material is made by adding carbon fibres to a carbon ceramic before it is fired. When the component has been heat-treated,it becomes very strong and able to withstand re-entry temperatures of 1,100 Celsius. In the X-30,the channel just behind the front of this component will carry piping for a liquid hydrogen active cooling system (liquid hydrogen is the X-30's fuel) | |
