Part of Barnard's Loop. This is a massive emission nebula found in the constellation of Orion. It has formed this shape as it is hit by the radiation from the nearby starforming region of the Orion Nebula. A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust in space, many light years across. It is called an emission nebula when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light. The hydrogen gas is ionised by nearby stars. A nebula contains materials to form new stars and planets. A star cluster (NGC 2112) is at the bottom edge of this part of the Loop. Two reflection nebulae (blue) are at lower right (M78,NGC 2068,bright; NGC 2071,faint,above and left of M78) | |
