Emission nebula IC 4606 (centre left, brown). This emission nebula surrounds the red giant star Alpha Scorpius (Antares, yellow, lower left). At centre right is globular cluster M4 (NGC 6121). Globular cluster NGC 6144 is near centre, obscured by the nebula. At top right is the star Sigma Scorpius, another star in the constellation of Scorpius. A nebula is a cloud of gas and dust in space, many light years across. It is called an emission nebula when the hydrogen gas is ionised, emitting red light. The hydrogen gas is being ionised by Antares. Globular clusters are balls of hundreds of thousands of stars. They are much more distant objects than these nearby bright stars | |
