Total solar eclipse. Sun's corona (atmosphere, white streaks) revealed as the Moon (dark circle) blocks the light from the Sun's visible surface (photosphere). This only happens during a total solar eclipse when the Moon passes directly in front of the Sun,and is possible due to the ratio of the sizes/distances of the Sun and Moon making them appear the same size. The corona is a low density cloud of plasma (hot ions). Also seen here are prominences (red, top and bottom),which are cooler regions of the corona. Prominences sometimes expand outwards into space, carrying off huge amounts of material | |
