Lick Observatory telescope. Astronomer using the telescope at the Lick Observatory on Mount Hamilton in California,USA. This observatory was founded through gifts made by the millionaire James Lick in the 1870s,and came under the directorship of the University of California in 1888. At an altitude of 1280 metres, the Lick Observatory was the world's first permanent mountaintop observatory. Its location provided excellent viewing conditions for years until light pollution from the nearby city of San Jose began to interfere with results. The original 90 centimetre refracting telescope was the largest in the world at the time | |
