Photograph, actual size of embryo = 16.0 mm - Near the end of the seventh week of development, the age is calculated from the day of fertilization, the embryo has experienced growth both in general size as well as specific body structures, such as the elongation of limbs. The fingers and toes are forming at this stage, though the fingers are more distinguished as the region of upper limb begins to develop earlier than the lower limb region. The eyelids are starting to form as well as the external ear. The external ear is still very low,at the base of the skull; however as the gestation period continues, this region will move upward. A nose is starting to form, thus indicating the gradual changes from the existing flat features on the face. (left view) Image from the book From Conception to Birth: A Life Unfolds | |
