Papilla vallata on tongue's surface. False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a single papilla vallata (pink),a site of taste buds. Taste buds are sensory receptors that occur on the tongue in grooves around the papillae, particularly in the cleft surrounding papilla vallatae (circumvallate papillae). Those taste buds associated with this type of papilla are sensitive to the bitter taste. There are about 9000 taste buds which are mostly distributed on the tongue's surface. Papilla vallatae are 1 to 2mm in diameter and are arranged in a v-shaped pattern at the tongue's root. Magnification: unknown | |
