Deformed sperm. Coloured scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) showing a deformed sperm. It is characterised by the presence of multiple tails (at left) stemming from the sperm head. Deformed sperm may lead to male infertility; in this case motility of the sperm may be seriously affected by having heavy, multiple tails. Sperm defects may be due to a blockage of the spermatic tubes in the testes or to damage to the spermatic ducts, usually caused by a sexually transmitted disease. Varicose veins in the scrotum may also be a factor for deformed sperm. Other causes of male inferti- lity include low sperm production and male impotence. Magnification: x5,000 at 6x6cm size | |
