MODEL RELEASED. Patient undergoing laser lithotripsy procedure to remove a kidney stone obstructing his right ureter. A pulsed dye laser is used to fragment such stones without damaging the surrounding tissue. An ultra-thin laser fibre is passed via the urethra & through the bladder into the affected ureter, the vessel through which urine drains from each kidney. A video attachment allows the surgical team to follow the progress of treatment. The fibre is directed towards the stone, which is shattered by pulses of the laser. Thus the drainage of urine from the kidney is unblocked, and the fragments of stone passed spontaneously in the urine. New York Hospital,NYC | |
