Coronary angioplasty. Three coloured coronary angiograms showing coronary angioplasty. The images shows the heart (blue) with the coronary arteries highlighted in orange. The top image shows a narrowed artery (top image, down right),this is known as stenosis. This is usually caused by the deposit of fatty material (atherosclero- sis). The aim is to restore the blood flow of the atherosclerotic artery. A catheter carrying an inflatable balloon is guided by X-ray imaging into the affected artery (middle image, lower centre). The balloon is then inflated thus reopening the artery. The bottom image shows blood flowing through the restored coronary artery | |
