Sphygmomanometer. View of a sphygmomanometer, used to measure blood pressure, seen with a healthy reading: 120/80 (systolic/diastolic pressure). The sphygmomanometer is used by inflating a cuff (not seen) on a patient's arm using a pump (upper left) until blood flow stops. The cuff is deflated until pulsing blood flow can be heard through a stethoscope (partly seen, lower left),giving the blood pressure during a heartbeat (systolic) on the gauge (lower centre). Further deflation gives the blood pressure between heartbeats (diastolic). Blood pressure,an important measure of health,is expressed as a combination of these two pressures,in millimetres of mercury (mmHg) | |
