This micrograph shows the callus that has formed around the fracture site of a long bone. It consists largely of cartilage that will undergo endochondral ossification. In this process,the cartilage calcifies and then is replaced by bone. Portions of the callus,on the left and on the right,have already begun the process of bone replacement. Eventually,the entire callus will consist of new bone and then finally be remodeled to complete the repair process. If the fracture is not immobilized,however,the cartilage within the callus will not be replaced by bone and,instead,the fracture will remain with only cartilage thereby preventing a bony reunion of the fractured bone.
