Composite of 4 axial (cross sectional) non-enhanced MRI images through the mastoid regions in a child with Histiocytosis X. Histiocytosis X has also been called Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). It includes eosinophilic granuloma,Hand-Schuller-Christian disease and Letterer-Siwe disease. This is a disorder characterized by abnormal accumulation of histiocytes in different parts of the body and carries different prognoses depending upon the extent of disease. The least severe form is eosinophilic granuloma. The most severe form is Letterer-Siwe disease and is usually fatal at a very early age. The lesions are characterized by an inflammatory and proliferative process. There can be multisystem involvement. In this case the mastoid regions are involved on both sides | |
