Necrotising fasciitis. Coloured X-ray of necrotising fasciitis in a cut in the heel of a foot. The deep wound is full of gas (red) produced by bacteria that have infected the wound and are destroying the fibrous connective tissue (fascia). Tissue death is known as necrosis. Bone is white and flesh blue. This wound is infected with Streptococcus sp.,Staphylococcus sp. and Clostridium sp. bacteria. The onset of necrotising fascitis is very rapid and large areas of fibrous connective tissue may become necrotic with a gangrenous appearance. The condition can be lethal if the bacteria causing the infection are resistant to common antibacterial drugs | |
