Colon diverticula. Coloured X-ray of part of the abdominal region of a 75-year-old male patient showing diverticula (small pouches,green/yellow) in the distal end of the colon. The patient was given a barium meal to make the appendix (centre left),large intestine (colon,up far left, across top, down far right) and rectum (bottom centre) appear opaque to X-rays. The formation of diverticula in the colon lining is thought to be linked to a low-fibre diet, and they are very common in the elderly. Usually, there are no symptoms, although some may cause abdominal cramps and constipation or diarrhoea. This patient also has an abnormally long appendix | |
