Breast cancer. Computer enhanced light micrograph of adenocarcinoma in a female breast. A mammary duct (left) is surrounded by disorganised proliferating cells (blue). These malignant cells have their origin in the epithelial lining of the ducts. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, with a peak incidence in the decade before the menopause. The large majority of carcinomas of the breast are invasive ductal carcinomas such as this. Surgical removal achieves a cure in one third of women with early breast cancer. Surgery involves lumpectomy or mastectomy and is often combined with use of radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Magnification: x100 at 35mm size | |
