The darker regions of the brain are the abnormal areas. They show diffuse brain oedema (swelling) secondary to lack of oxygen (anoxia). The brighter regions at the bottom of the image are parts of the cerebellum and brainstem which are not as severely involved. Patients who have severe anoxic change to the cerebral hemispheres but have spared the brainstem can end up in a persistent vegetative state since their vital functions of breathing etc can be maintained by the brainstem | |
