Hepatitis A virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a cluster of hepatitis A virus particles. The viruses are circular in shape (red) and are approximately 25- 30 nanometres in diameter. The incubation period of the illness is between two to six weeks and the severity of the infection increases with age. The virus attacks the liver causing liver inflammation and fever, followed by jaundice. The hepatitis A virus is excreted in faeces and is therefore transmitted by water or food contaminated with infected faeces. The disease is more prevalent in warm countries with poor standards of hygiene | |
