Herpes simplex viruses. Coloured Transmision Electron Micrograph (TEM) of herpes simplex virus particles. The viruses appear blue with their core of DNA genetic material seen. They are among the contents of an infected cell. Herpes simplex exists in two general forms: type I is associated with oral cold sore infections, and type II with genital herpes infections. Herpes simplex is one of the most common viral parasites in humans yet there is no cure. They cause small,fluid-filled blisters which,if touched, can spread the virus. The blisters occur on the mouth or genitalia and may persist for weeks. Antiviral drugs may be helpful. Magnification: x67,000 at 6x9cm size | |
