Hantaan virus. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of the Hantaan virus,a Bunyavirus which causes Korean haemorrhagic fever. The virus particles are coloured green and host cell material is red. Humans are infected with this virus by inhaling or ingesting the secretions or excreta of infected rodents. The disease has an incubation period of 1 to 5 weeks followed by fever and kidney pain. The virus causes blood to leak out of blood vessels into the tissues. Renal failure and jaundice may occur. There is no specific treatment, but renal dialysis reduces mortality from 20% to less than 1%. Magnification unknown | |
