American astrophysicist Arno Penzias (born 1933),co-discoverer of the 3 Kelvin microwave background radiation. Gamow & Herman's hypothesis of 1948 predicted that radiation released in the "big bang" should have cooled to a present-day temperature of around 5 Kelvin. In 1964,Penzias & Robert Wilson detected unexpected noise during a radio survey of the Milky Way. The signal strength was equal in all directions & corresponded to that emitted by a black body at 3.5 Kelvin. Their discovery is considered as some of the strongest evidence for the big bang theory for the origin of the universe. Penzias & Wilson were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1978 | |
