Oil-covered bird. Oil-covered red-throated loon,or diver (Gavia stellata). The most common cause of oil contamination of wildlife is an oil spill. Birds often become poisoned by the oil as they try to groom their feathers with their beak. The oil also reduces the insulation the loon's feathers provide.
