Meteorite crater. Wolf Creek Crater in the Australian desert. This crater, which is 1km across, was formed by collision of a meteorite with Earth. The meteorite may have only been several metres in diameter but it struck the ground with such speed that the surrounding landscape was deformed. The well-preserved shape of this crater has survived for thousands of years because weathering of rocks is very slow in arid environments. The abundance of vegetation in the middle might be explained by a depression in the ground that touches the water table | |
