Sand dune. Sun-reddened gypsum sand dune in the Tularosa Basin of New Mexico,USA,at the northern end of the Chihuahuan Desert. This area is the largest gypsum sand dune field in the world. These white dunes have engulfed over 700 square kilometres of desert. As strong winds cause the dunes to move rapidly, only a few plants can grow fast enough to prevent themselves from being buried. The gypsum crystallised from the water of an ancient lake as it gradually evaporated. Photographed at the White Sands National Monument | |
