Brontosaurus dinosaur model. Brontosaurus (also called Apatosaurus) was an enormous,long-necked herbivore that lived around 140 million years ago. Adults measured 18 metres long and weighed about 30 tonnes, but had tiny brains. Such a heavy animal probably ate continuously to maintain its bulk, perhaps by using its long neck to graze on high foliage like a giraffe. Leaves and twigs were snipped off with peg-like teeth, swallowed whole and ground up by pebbles inside the stomach. Brontosaurus was once thought to live standing in lakes to support its weight, using its neck as a snorkel, but scientists now think that it lived mostly on land | |
